Travis, Life Scout, from Troop 242 in Newport News chose to volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul’s Clothing Closet as his charitable organization for his Citizenship in the Community merit badge.
“I sorted so they can serve,” reflects Travis who worked with his mother for several days sorting and organizing the distribution center in preparation for the potential needs of guests during the winter. Due to the pandemic, the Clothing Closet was officially closed, but there were immediate needs and donations continued to come in from individuals, schools or other churches. Generous donations of coats and underwear were easier to accept and store after Travis worked for 8 hours unpacking existing bags and organizing the limited space.
In response to LINK’s request for clothing, Travis represented St. Vincent’s Social Action Center well by gathering and delivering: 153 pairs of underwear , 21 sweaters/sweatshirts, 5 pairs of jeans, and 15 coats! He also created 23 bags for immediate distribution containing a hat, gloves, scarf, and socks.
Although he has earned this merit badge, Travis plans to continue his work in the Clothing Closet readying it for the needs of guests as summer approaches.
